Introduction
Winter Spiti is not your average holiday. Temperatures drop to minus 20, roads are unpredictable, and network signals disappear after Kaza. But for those who prepare well, it becomes the most rewarding adventure of a lifetime. Here's everything you need to pack and know before heading into the frozen Himalayas.
Layering Is Everything
The key to surviving Spiti's extreme cold is layering. Start with thermal innerwear (carry at least two pairs), add a woolen sweater or fleece jacket, and top it off with a heavy-duty windproof and waterproof down jacket. Don't forget waterproof gloves, a woolen beanie, and a neck warmer — exposed skin doesn't last long in Spiti's icy winds.
Footwear and Accessories
Waterproof trekking shoes with snow-compatible soles are a must. Carry 5-6 pairs of warm socks and a pair of slippers for indoor use. UV-protected sunglasses are essential — snow glare at high altitude can damage your eyes. Pack SPF 50+ sunscreen, lip balm, and heavy moisturizer as the dry cold cracks skin fast.

Health and Altitude Prep
Altitude sickness is real in Spiti. Carry basic medicines for fever, cold, headache, and motion sickness. Consult your doctor about altitude sickness tablets before the trip. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol on the first day, and let your body acclimatize. TripFates provides oxygen support 24x7 on all Spiti trips for emergencies.
Cash, Network and Essentials
ATMs are rare after Rampur, so carry enough cash for the entire trip. Jio and BSNL work best but coverage is patchy after Kaza. Carry a high-capacity power bank since charging points are limited in remote homestays. Pack dry fruits, energy bars, and instant noodles as backup snacks. And most importantly — carry your Aadhaar card, it's mandatory for permits.
